Mediterranean 2008

Ravello Festival hosts opening of the
Perna Foundation’s first exhibit

The Mediterranean Depicted through the Works of 17 Artists

The grand opening of the Mediterranean 2008 exhibit is scheduled for June 27 in the exclusive halls of Villa Rufolo in Ravello. This will be part of a full program of events for the Ravello Festival, in the category of Visual Arts, directed by Achille Bonito Oliva.

The art exhibition, which will run from June 27 to August 24, 2008, includes pieces by 17 artists, selected by the Perna Foundation and its scientific committee composed of: Alanna Heiss (Director of the P.S.1 MoMA in New York), Vicente Todolì (Director of the Tate Modern in London), Marc Mayer (Director of the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Montréal), and Paolo Colombo (former curator of the MaXXI, Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo in Rome, and current Art Advisor for the Istanbul Modern and the Benaki Museum in Athens).

The artists featured are all from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and they narrate the rich, complex story of this geographic area through their works of art. “The Mediterranean is a thousand things together. Not one landscape, but a thousand landscapes; not one sea, but a succession of seas. Not one civilisation, but a series of interwoven, overlapping civilizations” (Fernand Braudel).

“The Perna Foundation is aware of this complex nature and takes it into account every year, as it dedicates much time and energy to the documentation and promotion of aspiring artists from Mediterranean countries. This is made possible through an exhibition that presents a well-organized, complex, diverse selection of experimental pieces by artists that tend to unite in creating a genius loci, which is always supported by an international language. The show emphasizes and celebrates the methodical use of memory in representing the traditional significance of Mediterranean art – the coexistence of different cultures,” explains Achille Bonito Oliva.

As the Curator of the Perna Foundation claims, “The title of the exhibit – MEDITERRANEAN 2008 – is based on the desire to illustrate, even partially, a contemporary prospective on the historic/artistic state of the Mediterranean. In fact, the Perna Foundation, will present the public with its updated 2008 collection, which it considers to be today’s main expression of dialogue among fine arts. And if this year’s theme for the Ravello Festival is “diversity,” then the Perna Foundation’s exhibit truly emphasizes all aspects relating to this concept: different political, religious, and ethnic atmospheres, various intellectual and psychological roots, the collective memories of different populations that live together in the Mediterranean. (…) Perhaps more obvious, is that the artists involved use extremely diverse media for their artistic expression: painting, sculpture, installation art, photography, video, etc. This formal multilingualism also corresponds to the aesthetic and interpretive significance of the individual works of art.”

Concentrating on art and contemporary Mediterranean culture, the Perna Foundation is a non-profit organization that acts as a true observatory in the Mediterranean. Established in 2006 by Giovanna Palumbo Perna – who has been an avid collector and generous patron for more than 25 years - the Perna Foundation’s goal is to give contemporary art a stronger voice in commenting on the geographic, anthropologic, and intellectual state of affairs in this area.
